Why read it

Endlessly quotable, secretly clever, and unlike anything before it: a children’s book that logicians and poets never stopped reading. A short, strange delight.

Themes
SettingA dream-Wonderland

Victorian England seen sidewise, its manners, trials, and schoolroom logic turned upside down inside a dream.

About the author

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Dodgson (1832–1898), an Oxford mathematician and photographer who invented the tale to entertain a real girl named Alice on a boating afternoon, then wrote it down at her asking.
