Why read it

The most emotionally true novel ever written about love and marriage, generous to everyone, including the people who ruin their lives. You’ll recognise someone you know on every page.

SettingRussia, 1870s

A Russian aristocracy that lived between Petersburg salons and country estates, bound by a rigid code in which a man’s affair was overlooked and a woman’s destroyed her. Reform was loosening the old certainties.

About the author

Count Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) wrote Anna Karenina just after War and Peace, at the height of his powers and on the edge of a spiritual crisis. He called it his first true novel.
