SettingIndustrial England, 1850s

England split between the genteel, agricultural South and the smoky, booming industrial North, where mill owners and mill hands eyed each other across a chasm of wealth, and the modern economy was being born in anger.

About the author

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865), a minister’s wife who knew industrial Manchester well, wrote with rare sympathy about workers and masters alike. This is her finest novel.
