Why read it

The warmest of Austen's novels and a perfect double portrait of head and heart, sharp about money, marriage, and the danger of feeling too much in a world that prizes composure.

Themes
SettingRegency England, 1790s

In Regency England a genteel woman without a fortune was almost wholly dependent on marriage, and an unguarded attachment could ruin her. Sense was survival; sensibility was a luxury few could afford.

About the author

Jane Austen (1775–1817) published her novels anonymously from a quiet country life, beginning with this one, drafted in her youth as an epistolary tale called “Elinor and Marianne.” Her cool, exact wit reshaped the English novel.
