Cézanne’s players keep their hats on and their attention on the cards. A pipe remains in the left-hand player’s mouth; the wine between them goes untouched.

Details

Follow the players’ eyes down to their hands, then return to the bottle between them. The game occupies their attention while drinking waits.

A way of seeing

Genre scene

A genre scene shows ordinary people at an everyday task, with no story from myth or scripture behind it. Here it is men playing cards together at a table.
