Begin with one detail
The light on Vermeer’s bread, and the opening of Frankenstein.

A painting: follow the pour
Follow the thin pour from the jug, then look at the bread and basket. Vermeer uses bright dots of paint, called pointillé, to catch the light on those surfaces.
A book: begin Frankenstein without looking ahead
Read a chapter. If a name or reference interrupts you, set the companion to that chapter and look it up.
If your edition’s labels differ, choose an earlier chapter.
A connection: attention before explanation
A dot of paint or an unfamiliar name can be a useful place to begin. These works are paired for that approach; the pairing does not imply historical influence.
