Echo

Echo · the voice that can only answer

Echo can speak, but cannot begin. She must wait for someone else’s words before returning their ending, even when she longs to say something of her own.

Context

In Metamorphoses III, Juno imposes this limit on the nymph’s speech. Her meeting with Narcissus turns a familiar sound into a thwarted conversation.
